Kansas City Royals outfielder Tyler Tolbert made history Tuesday night (July 7) by tying a Major League Baseball record with 12 consecutive hits. The 28-year-old achieved this feat during the Royals' thrilling 16-12 comeback victory over the New York Mets. Tolbert became the fifth player in MLB history to reach this milestone, joining the ranks of Johnny Kling and Walt Dropo, among others.
Batting ninth, Tolbert hit a two-run homer in the second inning and followed it with singles in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. His record-tying hit was an infield single. However, his streak ended in the ninth inning when he flied out to right field against A.J. Minter. The bat used for his record-tying hit is set to be displayed in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
Despite being primarily known for his defensive skills and speed, Tolbert's recent performance highlights his offensive capabilities. He was drafted by the Royals in the 13th round of the 2019 draft and debuted in the majors on March 31, 2025. Tolbert's remarkable achievement was celebrated by his teammates with a Champagne toast in the locker room after the game.
Royals manager Matt Quatraro praised Tolbert, saying, "I just couldn’t be more proud of him, the way he competes. His effort, energy, attitude — he lifts everybody up every day." Teammate Nick Loftin added, "He’s a sparkplug. I’m happy that he’s able to find some success and consistent at-bats."
Tolbert's achievement comes on the heels of a strong performance against Philadelphia, where he went 2 for 2 before being substituted. His consecutive five-hit games make him the first player to do so since Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente in 1970.
The Royals will continue their series against the Mets with Steven Cruz set to pitch as an opener against Mets' Christian Scott.
